Areas of scientific activity:

  • Hot physical modeling of processes of phase and structure formation in liquid and solidifying alloys;
  • Development of techniques for manufacture of steel grades, and special steel and alloys;
  • Development of methods for control of phase/structure formation in manufacture of skelp steel grades on the basis of hot physical modeling of the processes forming slab cast structure and its evolution in the subsequent thermal and mechanical treatment.

Laboratory’s main partners:

  • OAO Severstal
  • FSUE Central Research Institute of Structural Materials “Prometey”
  • OAO CNIIM
  • United Machine-building Plants “Spetsstal” (OMZ-Special Steels, LLC)
  • OAO Petrostal
  • State Research and Production Enterprise ”Splav”
  • OOO Robert Bosñh

Laboratory’s equipment:

Description

Technical parameters

Induction melting unit of UIP -100-2,4-0.06×0.02 type

The unit includes two furnaces with a capacity of 60 and 20 kg, and is intended for induction melting of ferrous, nonferrous and precious metals with high-frequency currents. The power supply is 100 kW, operating frequency 2.4 kHz, voltage level 3õ380 V, specific power consumption 680 kW/t.

Induction melting unit of UIP -16-10-0.01 type

The unit includes a furnace with a capacity of 10 kg intended for melting of ferrous, nonferrous and precious metals in packing/measuring crucibles. Power supply is 16 kW, operating frequency 10 kHz, voltage level 380 V.

Vacuum induction furnace ISV 001 PI

The furnace is equipped with an inductor with a capacity of 10 kg, steel smelting and casting is carried out in vacuum with rarefication o up to 10-2 mm of mercury column

Device for determination of nitrogen in steel, cast iron, alloys and other solid materials – ELTRA ON900

The device is fitted with a 16-bit microprocessor and two independent oxygen detectors to ensure optimal precision of the analyses for high/low oxygen levels.

High-temperature water-cooled electrode pulse furnace is equipped with graphite crucibles for heating of a sample to 3,000°Ñ. The method of the analysis consists in semiconducting oxygen absorbtion, thermal conductivity for nitrogen. Furnace power range: 0-kW.

SPECTROMAX-F optical emission spectrometer to determine the chemical composition of steel and cast iron

The device is fitted with a system for recording of a spectrum in high-resolution ccd-detectors. The spark source is provided with semiconductor control. Plasma current is 1 to 80 A. Max. power during spark treatment 400 VA

VIBROMET 2 vibratory polishing machine

Spacious working surfaces allows for processing of up to 18 inserted or several large-size non-inserted samples.

Driving mechanism provides for practically 100% horizontal movement of the working surface. This horizontal shift with a frequency of 7,200 cycles/sec ensures high-quality surface finish of the samples.
